What is Corona Virus ? – Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new strain that was discovered in 2019 and has not been previously identified in humans. Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). Also Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause disease in animals. Seven, including the new virus, have made the jump to humans, but most just cause cold-like symptoms.

The new virus, officially called Covid-19, is also dangerous – so far, around 20 per cent of confirmed cases have been classed as severe or critical. So far, around 15 to 20 per cent of hospital cases have been classed as “severe” and the current death rate varies between 0.7 per cent and 3.4 per cent depending on the location and, crucially, access to good hospital care.

Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people.  Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

Scientists in China believe that Covid-19 has mutated into two strains, one more aggressive than the other, which could make developing a vaccine more complicated.

How this outbreaks starts ?

On December 31 last year, China alerted WHO to several cases of unusual pneumonia in Wuhan, a port city of 11 million people in the central Hubei province. The virus was unknown. Several of those infected worked at the city’s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which was shut down on January 1. As health experts worked to identify the virus amid growing and the number of infected increases day by day.

After few days, On January 7, Chinese officials announced they had identified a new virus, according to the WHO. The novel virus was named 2019-nCoV and was identified as belonging to the corona virus family, which includes SARS and the common cold.

First death was announced by China on January 11, 2020. A 61-year-old man who had purchased goods from the seafood market has been died due to this virus. No any treatment improve his symptoms after he was admitted to hospital and he died of heart failure on the evening of January 9.

Coronaviruses are common and spread through being in proximity to an infected person and inhaling droplets generated when they cough or sneeze, or touching a surface where these droplets land and then touching one’s face or nose.

How does this corona virus spread ?

When a new virus emerges, we often have to learn much more about it, and one of the things that we question is how does it transmit from a person to person ? We know that most respiratory viruses are spread by large droplets that come out when people cough and sneeze, and stay aloft usually for about six feet in front of them. They land on surfaces, and they can also be transmitted between person to person by touching their surfaces, such as door knobs, or others surfaces. Other viruses can spread in the air and stay aloft for a longer period of time in a small droplet nuclei. For the current 2019 coronavirus, we are not yet sure whether it is a droplet or airborne transmission, so we are erring on the side of caution and taking precaution as it was spread by the airborne route.
